BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Auditors found issues with reimbursement requests within the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The program helps local governments with funding to reduce property damage risk from storms and disasters. According to an audit, $29,186,112 total in reimbursement requests were submitted from Jan. 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. A review found $3,928,311 in exceptions. Concerns included out-of-scope expenses, expenses lacking supporting documentation, unsupported procurement, an ineligible expense and errors. "GOHSEP has established effective mechanisms to address many of the questioned costs identified in your report. Our HMGP reimbursement review process ensures that all exceptions must be fully resolved before the disbursement of funds or the closeout of projects," said Sandra D. Gaspard, assistant director of the Hazard Mitigation Assistance Division. Audit of Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge shows reported bank fraud, tax exemption loss Gaspard acknowledged that the lack of supporting documentation was the most significant exception auditors noted. According to auditors, the agency worked with subgrantees to resolve $15,891,312 of exceptions from the current and prior reporting periods.
