Euclid City Council has approved the final steps of adding a new top-mount pumper fire engine to the Euclid Fire Department’s fleet. The new engine will be purchased from The Sutphen Corporation in Columbus for $939,700 and will be used to replace Euclid’s previous frontline fire apparatus, which has been used for nearly 10 years, and is starting to require more maintenance. According to Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rowell, the new truck will replace Engine 1312 out of Fire Station No. 2, located at 1500 Chardon Road. “It will give us some more reliability for the citizens of the city and will have a better warranty on the vehicle,” Rowell said. “We are just excited because our Engine now, 1312, is almost 10 years old, and that’s usually when we put something in reserve. “We have a couple reserve apparatus that are almost 20 years old so we will replace that with 1312.” He said because Euclid handles nearly 13,000 calls a year, the wear and tear on vehicles quickly adds up, and having a newer vehicle means more reliable service for residents, but also peace of mind for the firefighters working on the scene. “The service it will provide will still be response for (service calls) for when an engine is needed for more man power,” Rowell added. He said that the new engine will be used as a first response vehicle for the area that Station No. 2 covers but would also provide as a backup or second due vehicle for Station No. 1 and Station No. 3. “The biggest thing is it’s just a newer engine and (because of) the reliability, it will have a better response and availability for the city,” Rowell said. “We just want to thank the Mayor and Council members for the approval in allowing us to get this new vehicle.”
