Photo by Tim Heitman/Getty Images A much needed big man presence in the second unit has reemerged I know it has not been a huge sample size, but already I am quite excited to see Charles Bassey on the court. He has been out a long time. He played in thirty-five games in the 2022-2023 season, but an ACL injury sidelined the Nigerian-born big man for most of last season, being limited to nineteen games. Personally, I was high on Bassey since he joined. He had a lot of raw material to be molded, but already had a solid basketball IQ. He possessed and understanding of positioning and strength in the paint necessary for taking on almost any second unit in the league. So seeing him earn any time on the court right now is a blessing. And what did we get for our patience? Last Tuesday, Bassey played ten minutes and pulled four boards and knocked down two baskets. To be clear, these were his two baskets. And again in the fourth quarter. And then again on Thursday night in Houston: He scored 10 points with 5 rebounds and a filthy block in his fourteen minutes of play. From the smallest sliver of a sample, Bassey is showing patience and power. When paired with a smooth point guard (which is what we are seeing in Castle and hope is developing), his alley oops game has the potential to be fierce. Welcome to the Thread.
