LANDOVER, Md. (DC News Now) -- Washington Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green is being honored by both the NFL franchise and D.C. over the weekend. The 1983 first-round pick will have his jersey retired during the Washington Commanders' game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. On Saturday, he will receive a key to Washington, D.C., from Mayor Murial Bowser at a 10 a.m. ceremony at Franklin Park. Former Washington Commanders legends host clinic for Special Olympics athletes Green, a two-time Super Bowl Champion and seven-time Pro Bowler, recorded more than 50 interceptions in his 20 seasons -- all of which were for the burgundy and gold. Fans who spoke with DC News Now shared their excitement about the team honoring past legends. "Guys like Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, they didn't want to play him because they knew [Green] was going to give me a hard time," football fan Nick Davis, said. Another football fan, Brian Charles added, "You're talking about, hands-down, one of the best corners to ever play the game." Green spoke with DC News Now Sports Director Derek Forest about the honors. "My whole entire adult life, it's been here [in D.C.]," he said. "So that's really validating to me as a human.
