ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With all the roadwork on 490 recently many may have noticed the work zone speed cameras.  They have been around New York State for over a year now.   It’s part of the automated work zone speed enforcement program signed into law in September 2021. It’s a five-year program with a joint effort by the Department of Transportation and the state throughway authority. Josh Heller with the DOT tells News 8 there are a total of 30 total units.  20 of them are with the state dot 10 of them are with thruway. He adds there are a number of things that go into play when deciding which construction zone will have one placed there. Those include characteristics such as facility types, speed limits, and even the history of previously clocked MPH in an area.  For example, he says last year three of the top speeds that were clocked were in Monroe County on NY Route 104, with the highest being 139 miles an hour.  If someone is found speeding in a work zone, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a notice of liability in the mail. If someone believes they have received that in error, they can dispute it. Each notice of liability is mailed with a “Dispute Coupon” attached to the Notice which should be completed and mailed, or it can be found on the state’s website to do it online.  However, Heller says these systems are required to be recalibrated and resurfaced on an annual basis, adding that it runs daily self-checks so the DOT is confident in the technology and what’s being put out there.  He says safety is the most important thing, noting that crashes in work zones in 2021 were over 370, and have been increasing since. Last year crashes topped 400, with three fatalities.   “These are men and woman who are going out to do their work you know they’re family members they’re people who are just trying to do their job and we are trying to make sure that they can do so in the safest environment possible.” More information on the program and how it works, can be found here, as well as more on work zone safety awareness.
