SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A list of potential school closures has left many San Francisco Unified School District parents “confused” about the future of where their children will be exactly attending school, with many putting the blame on SFUSD’s Superintendent, Dr. Matt Wayne.  On Friday night, the school district announced Wayne's departure, saying, “The time is right for new leadership in SFUSD.”   “I am writing to share the difficult decision to leave the San Francisco Unified School District as of October 18,” Wayne said. “I believe the time is right for new leadership in the District. From day one, every decision I have made has been to benefit the students, families, and staff of SFUSD, including this one. I appreciate the opportunity to have served this community during such challenging times.” In replacement of Wayne, the San Francisco Board of Education announced it intends to appoint Dr. Maria Su as Superintendent and Dr. Karling Aguilera-Fort as Deputy Superintendent.  “As the District continues to navigate difficult decisions ahead, we need a steady hand on the tiller,” said President of the Board of Education Matt Alexander. “(Su’s) deep expertise in leading teams and running a large government agency is exactly what we need to stabilize our school district.” Su has served as Executive Director of the Department of Children, Youth and their Families (DCYF) since 2011. With DCYF, Su guided her department through both a recession and the COVID-19 pandemic.  “It is a privilege to be considered for this opportunity by the Board of Education, and I am excited to deepen the work we started three weeks ago to stabilize the school district,” Su said. “San Francisco public schools are the city’s greatest asset. We must come together as a community to take care of our school district. SFUSD students, families, and staff are counting on us.” Dr. Su has previously been serving as the co-lead of the city’s "School Stabilization Team," a team appointed by San Francisco Mayor London Breed to collaborate with SFUSD staff to improve “major structural issues.”   “Dr. Maria Su has been a champion for families and children in our city and she has my full confidence in this new role leading our public schools,” said Mayor London Breed.  The mayor emphasized that the staffing resources available under the School Stabilization Team will remain available to Su in her work as she transitions to her new position, according to SFUSD. Su and Aguilera-Fort will officially be appointed at the next SF Board of Education’s regular meeting on Oct. 22, SFUSD said.
