(KRON) -- Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will spend the holidays with his family as a free man. Velasquez, who was convicted of attempting to murder a suspected child molester, is facing prison time. He was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday in the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice. The hearing, however, was postponed until January 24, 2025. Velasquez, 42, will remain out of custody on bail until he is sentenced. Prosecutors said the mixed martial arts fighter went on a "vigilante shooting spree" in Morgan Hill and San Jose when he tried to kill Harry Goularte on Feb. 28, 2022. Just days before the chaotic shooting, one of Velasquez’s children reported being molested by Goularte inside a San Martin daycare, court documents show. The alleged victim was four years old at the time. Judge Arthur Bocanegra will decide Velasquez’s punishment in January. Bocanegra could sentence the UFC star to the maximum term of 40 years in prison. Or, the judge could let Velasquez go with no prison time. Prosecutor Aaron French previously told KRON4, "The judge could grant him probation with no additional custodial time as the minimum." He is scheduled to appear in court on November 13 to set a date for his jury trial.
