HAMILTON — Now the Thrive Charter boys’ soccer team knows the kind of effort it will take to earn a piece of the Burlington County Scholastic League Independence Division title. Two days after a disappointing shutout defeat at the hands of third-place Pennsauken Tech, the recently monikered Titans, the division’s second-place team, hosted leader Doane Academy in a first-place clash Friday. Things did not start out so well when the Spartans’ Ygor Santana knocked in a goal off the post in the first minute, but Thrive Charter rallied to turn the game in its favor before matching Doane for 100 minutes to draw a 3-3 tie after two scoreless, 10-minute overtimes. The tie still leaves the Titans a chance at the league crown. Thrive is 8-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the Independence Division with games remaining against Burlington City Monday, at Doane Academy next Friday and at Willingboro Oct. 28. Thrive Charter would need to win out because the Spartans (11-2-2, 10-0-1) have just the one blemish on their divisional record from yesterday’s game. “I wanted us to get the win, but I am still thrilled,” said Matt Stout, Thrive’s assistant coach who was filling in for head coach Ruben Morales, who was away at a wedding. “The other day (against Pennsauken Tech), we came out flat and took them lightly. Today, every time we faced adversity, we fought back. This was a great bounce-back game. It’s always fun playing Doane.” As much as the Spartans would have liked to have won the game and the division title yesterday, they seemed to be having just as much fun squaring off with the equally talented Titans. Things got interesting when Thrive Charter junior striker Adolphus Temeh got a ball at midfield and drove all the way to the goal (past seven players) to score with 18 minutes left in the first half. Suddenly, the game was tied, 1-1. Both teams had solid scoring chances in the final 10 minutes of the first half. First, Doane Academy 6-foot-4 senior forward Josh Daly got through the defense for a crossing shot which skipped inches wide. Then Temeh got another chance at the other end with a leaping header off a corner kick, but the redirect went over the bar. The Titans maintained their intensity once returning to the field in the second half. Five minutes in, sophomore midfielder Jonathan Alvarez centered a ball to junior midfielder Jason Carias, who kicked the go-ahead goal past Spartans sophomore goalkeeper Chenyu “Alan” Yi. The fun lasted for about 12 minutes until Daly won a bad clear in Thrive’s backfield, drew senior goalkeeper Edgar Lima (10 saves) off his line and shot behind him to tie the game, 2-2. Five minutes later, Alvarez sent another shot from the far side on goal. Though Yi (eight saves) stopped Alvarez’ try, Carias slipped in along the far post to knock home another go-ahead goal when the ball popped free. “In practice, we’re always told to crash the net. You’ve always got to be there,” Carias said. “I put what I learned in practice into play, and the adrenalin motivated me.” With just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Daly stole a ball that Lima was sliding to cover and tapped it in the vacated net to knot the score, 3-3. Despite 30 more minutes of play, neither team could break through again. “Tuesday we didn’t come out strong, so we had to correct our wrongs today,” Carias said. “It was more mental for us. I feel like our team is capable of winning every game. It’s a matter of how much we want it.” Thrive Charter will get a chance to prove that over the next 10 days as it tries to earn at least a share of the BCSL Independence Division crown. Doane Acad.
