CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Deadly crashes involving those who help drivers with roadside assistance are on the rise, and one local towing service is reminding the community that this is preventable. "If you see the yellow flashing lights out there please read the warnings, you need to slow down and move over," shared Stephen Gonneville, General Manager of Interstate Towing Inc. October 19th is known as National Move Over Day, reminding drivers to slow down and switch lanes when roadside assistance is in distance. According to Stephen Gonneville from Interstate Towing, a tow truck operator is killed every six days in the United States. Reducing speed before nearing an emergency worker on the shoulder lane helps them return home safely. Gonneville told 22News that he remembers one former employee involved in an incident that nearly killed him two years ago. Thankfully, that employee was not hurt. A 24-7 industry that runs 365 days a year. Interstate Towing serves drives from the Mass Pike to every major highway in between. Commonly, they are the first to respond when a driver is having an emergency, now reminding drivers how they can help keep them safe. Texting and driving is another huge issue. The distracted driving out there does not help with the slow down move over, because people are too busy trying to get a photograph as they are driving by the accident to see what's going on," shared Stephen Gonneville. The Massachusetts Move Over law requires drivers to take safety precautions when nearing stationary emergency or maintenance vehicles when on the highway.
