Boulders crush van on Highway 18 in San Bernardino Mountains; driver freed from wreckage
Oct 18, 2024
A driver had to be cut out of the wreckage on Friday, Oct. 18, after boulders tumbled onto Highway 18 near Crestline and crushed his van, the San Bernardino County Fire Department said.
He was taken to a hospital.
Highway 18 was closed for more than three hours.
The slide was reported just after 8 a.m. in the Crest Forest area. The highway reopened at about 11:30 a.m., Caltrans said.
Caltrans plans to remove unstable rock in the area when workers become available, spokesman Eric Dionne said. Currently, crews are focusing on Highway 330, which remains closed from Highland Avenue to about two miles south of the 18 because of damage caused by the Line fire.
The driver’s condition was not known as of Friday evening.
