Former One Direction singer Liam Payne was reportedly under the influence of a drug known to cause psychotic attacks and hallucinations prior to his fatal fall on Wednesday from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. According to TMZ, police in Argentina said the 31-year-old popstar appeared to have ingested a substance called “Cristal,” which can make a user act erratically and become aggressive. However, it’s unknown if an official toxicology report had been completed as of Friday. Payne plunged to his death on Wednesday at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, just minutes after a receptionist called 911 asking for help, saying a guest was “trashing” his room and was believed to be “high on drugs.” Authorities later said the singer “jumped from the balcony” of his third-floor room, suffering multiple traumatic injuries resulting in internal and external bleeding that led to his immediate death. According to Argentine newspaper La Nación, police responding to the scene said they discovered aluminum foil, a lighter and traces of a “white powder” in the room where Payne was staying. But it wasn’t immediately known if what they found were drugs, nor was it clear if the boy band member had toxic substances in his system. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is still ongoing. According to TMZ, around the start of the summer, Payne told people he knew that he was doing well in his battle to stay sober. Friends reportedly saw no indication of drug or alcohol abuse at the time. Some reports indicate that may have changed in the recent months. British tabloids reported the singer checked into a rehab facility in July, but left the 30-day program after just a few days. The English popstar had previously opened up about his attempts to get clean, telling fans in a July 2023 YouTube video that he was nearly six months sober after spending 100 days in a rehab center. “I had become somebody who I didn’t really recognize anymore,” he said at the time.
