LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - October is National Cyber Security Month and Bay Path University held its 12th annual cybersecurity summit to educate people about the impact of AI on cybersecurity. While many may think of cybersecurity as solely technology, the summit aimed to highlight how it also impacts safety and protection for individuals and organizations. As AI continues to evolve and advance, so do potential threats and vulnerabilities. On Friday, Bay Path University provided a platform for future leaders in cybersecurity to learn about the latest advancements. "We don't have enough people in the industry, and it's not just about technology, its about how we help people understand how to run their business more efficiently or leverage AI, how are going to use, how are we going to revolutionize it, how are we going to protect our staff," said Program Director for Bay Path Cybersecurity and Computer Science Programs, Dr. Douglas Keevers. Richard Diver was a speaker at the summit. He explained how AI helps maintain the security and success of businesses and individuals. "It's really good at helping companies gather massive amounts of data, get users to use it in a way they haven't before, by generating new content from multiple sources," said Diver. But cyber attackers are also using it to their advantage. "The attackers can use the tool in the same way an offender can so they can use the tool to create more phisher emails maybe in a localized way or different languages," said Diver. And for generating personal data, Diver says not to put it into just any AI on the internet. "I'd only want to make sure it's associated with a company or service I had belief in that they weren't going to misuse that data," added Diver. In the future, he says AI will have the ability to remember what you asked last time and remember your personality type. And as the AI and cybersecurity industry advances, Bay Path University is preparing their students for careers like information analysts and government leadership.
