BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP)-- The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has awarded $50-million in funding to 45 municipalities across the state for paving projects, including fourteen in western Massachusetts. The money is part of the Municipal Pavement Program used to repair state roads that run through cities and towns, with an emphasis on National Highway System (NHS) roadways. Some 260 miles of road will be paved. I-91 South in Enfield shutdown due to serious crash “MassDOT is excited to announce the next round of awards for the Municipal Pavement Program, which will provide funding and technical assistance to 45 communities across the state,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. “By making this support available to municipalities, we will make our roads smoother and safer, particularly in 27 Environmental Justice communities and 22 rural communities.”  “Since the Municipal Pavement Program’s inception in 2021, MassDOT has funded $75 million in paving improvements for over 325 miles of roadways across the Commonwealth,” said Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. “We look forward to supporting our municipal partners throughout the planning and construction process as these projects progress.”  Funding is awarded each fiscal year based on pavement condition data, the proportion of state numbered routes in poor condition in a municipality, and geographic equity.
