A first grade special needs teacher at Midway Elementary School is set to appear in Utah Fourth District Court Oct. 30 for an incident March 28, when she allegedly struck a special needs student above his eyebrow.According to Wasatch County School District Public Information Officer Kirsta Albert, the teacher is “on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”Midway Elementary School Principal Jennie Mecham reported the incident to law enforcement April 1, the Monday after the Thursday incident occurred, according to an affidavit written by Wasatch sheriff’s Sgt. Raymond Baeza.The child said in an interview with Wasatch County Children’s Justice that he “wasn’t being good enough” for the teacher when she allegedly struck him, according to the affidavit.“(The student) disclosed (the accused teacher)“smacked” him twice and pointed to his right eyebrow,” the document states. “(The student) disclosed (the teacher) than put him in ‘time out.'”When he got home, the student added, he shook his dog’s hand.  The document also contains interviews from other aides who said the teacher was frustrated with the student.One aide told Baeza she had eaten lunch with the student before he elected to have recess in the accused teacher’s room. When she returned, she could hear the teacher yelling.According to the document, initially the aide “thought this was normal because (the teacher’s) personality is to be loud and aggressive towards the kids.” She then realized “(the teacher) was upset and going off on (the student).”After the aide left the room with the student, she noticed a welt above his eyebrow. She asked how it happened, and the student told her the accused teacher hit him.The aide told Baeza “(the teacher) is known to be aggressive towards the students” and has no patience with them.The teacher is facing a possible third-degree felony for abuse or neglect of a child with disability.The post Midway teacher faces accusation she struck special needs first grader appeared first on Park Record.
