For the first time in awhile, a forecast for heavier winds Friday was part of the good news. And Open Snow’s app read a bit like a winter’s day on the slopes with its summary, beginning with “snow continues to fall in the high elevations of Utah …”The National Weather Service’s Salt Lake City office said “chances for easterly downslope/canyon winds are increasing. A High Wind Watch will be in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning for the Northern Wasatch Front.”Colder temperatures will follow the passage of the front with many near- to below-freezing temperatures across northern Utah. “Be sure to cover vulnerable plants and considering winterizing exposed sprinkler lines,” the office suggested. Fire analysts tracking the Yellow Lake Fire recorded up to 10 inches in the highest parts of the fire around the same time. Thayer cautioned against getting too excited about implications for ski season, saying October storms rarely leave anything lasting in the way of snowpack, and high pressure along with higher temperatures will return next week.Storms with snow appear to be tracking to our north in the longer forecast, as well, but Thayer said there at least were hints of as least some dipping south to northern Utah.Saturday and Sunday in the Park City area should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid-50s, according to the Weather Service. Lows should range between 26 and the low 30s. The forecast for next week is clear and warmer, with lows in the higher 30s and highs in the 60s.Jess Miller and her dog, Charlie, enjoy the freshly fallen snow in the open space next to Park City Library on Friday morning.
