Park City leaders next week are expected to formally acknowledge Native Americans once inhabited the land where the community is located. The land acknowledgment is included in a resolution that will be presented to Mayor Nann Worel and the Park City Council declaring November to be Native American Heritage Month in the community. The elected officials typically endorse month-long resolutions without extensive discussion. One of the passages in the resolution that will be presented on Thursday reads: “Whereas we acknowledge that Summit County is situated on the ancestral lands of the Shoshone, Ute, and other indigenous Americans. These nations have been deeply connected to this territory for generations, cultivating a rich cultural heritage and stewarding the land.”Land acknowledgements are not known to be widespread in the Park City area. The Sundance Film Festival, though, has added one. Some of the other passages in the one-page resolution that will be considered on Thursday:“Whereas it is essential to acknowledge the historical and ongoing contributions of the Shoshone, Ute and other indigenous Americans to our society and to promote understanding and respect for their diverse cultures.” “That the Park City Council honors and acknowledges the Shoshone, Ute and indigenous Americans and recognizes their enduring contributions to our community.” “That the Park City Council encourages all to participate in events and activities that celebrate Native American Heritage Month and to learn more about the history, culture, and traditions of indigenous Americans.”Park City officials rarely address issues related to Native Americans and the issues only occasionally become part of the public discourse in the community. The Ute Indian Tribe Political Action Committee previously has set up a small table on Main Street as Sundance started. A demonstration in early 2017 was organized in opposition to an oil pipeline amid widespread concern about the route crossing sacred land. The Park City government earlier identified equity as a critical priority for the community. The meeting on Thursday is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Marsac Building. The elected officials will accept public input about the Native American Heritage Month resolution prior to a vote. The post Park City readies land acknowledgment recognizing the Shoshone, Utes appeared first on Park Record.
