NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Just as the name states, the Vieux Carré Property Owners and Residents and Associates was founded to preserve the international treasure that is the French Quarter. Now they have produced a documentary that takes a look at one of the biggest threats to the area, they call it "overtourism." Only in Louisiana, one radio station reads between the lines "I think that the documentary looks at what healthy tourism is and what it can be. And we certainly have healthy tourism here. But there's also some impacts of tourism that need to be managed. We have to maintain this very small neighborhood so that it can continue to be an economic driver, and so that it can continue to be a neighborhood," said Executive Director, VCPORA Erin Holmes. The film takes a look at the impacts of tourism on the 300-year-old neighborhood. "When you think about 19.75 million people, that's nearly 20 million people on your sidewalks, moving cars throughout your neighborhood, that's 20 million toilet flushes. When we look at our infrastructure, it wasn't designed to carry 20 million people," said Holmes The producer, writer and director of "Wasted, Overtourism in the French Quarter", is a familiar face in Laura Cayouette. She says that a number of factors contributed to over-tourism include illegal short-term rentals and soaring costs but the result is fewer people residing in the Quarter over the time it took to produce the film. "The amount of people who've left the quarter during the last four years when I was filming, that includes me, I had to leave the quarter as well. I don't know if you can do the math on that but if we lose 600 people every 4 years and we only had 3,00 to begin with we're gonna be out of people," said Laura Cayouette. Peek inside the newly renovated Caesars New Orleans VCPORA calls the documentary a love letter, hoping that stakeholders and residents can begin to better care for the international treasure that is the Vieux Carre. Another producer on the project is a former WGNO staffer Max Fisk. "There's so much beauty to it and people actually live there and they make it their own so I guess I just learned a little bit more about the Quarter and how we need to protect it," said Fisk.
