I-65 closure near downtown Indianapolis to begin Tuesday evening The exit onto 38th Street is just one of the alternate routes drivers are using. Since 2018, Animation Art Studio has sat right off of 38th and Illinois. Over the years, owner Amani Treniner said the main artery, 38th Street, has just gotten worse and worse.“Traffic has gotten crazy because, of course, they did moving, a lot of detouring, a lot of traffic from 65,” he said. "The amount of vehicles going through areas that were meant for small, rural travel is not it's not working out well, at least as far as I see.”The road has also had some recent changes, like adding a bus lane onto the typically 3-lane road."38th Street, near Keystone, it gets down to one lane in certain areas and I don’t know the numbers, but there’s a ridiculous amount coming from 70 and then 65 and then, of course, 38th Street,” said Treniner.Another exit commuters are taking is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Street. Right now, there are some lane restrictions as you get closer to 29th Street. One driver said she had to leave 40 minutes earlier than normal.“Oh my god, I have to leave early,” said Tyriah Basfield. “I have to leave so much earlier every day just to get to work on time and it's really an inconvenience."The last spot to exit before the closure is at 21st Street. That's just before commuters reach the hospital construction that is currently underway, also merging traffic to just one open lane. “There's been so much construction, and it's just kind of frustrating a little bit, because I feel like just a lot of people just don't know where to go,” said Elizabeth Conway, another driver. INDOT moves up start of major I-65 SB closure to avoid Taylor Swift concerts Since Treniner was born and raised in Indy, he said he knows all the routes to get around and recommends other drivers spend time finding their reroutes as well. "If it's 38th Street related, I'm taking 46th Street. For the most part, I'm gonna take 46th Street,” he said. “If I'm going north, I'm not taking 65. I usually take 69 like Fall Creek to Bedford at 69." According to INDOT,  the I-65 construction will only take 16 days and is expected to be back open before the end of the month.
