GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Triad Aviation Academy in Greensboro is making a big impact on storm-torn areas of western North Carolina.   During the first two weeks following Helene, the fleet was making about five trips a day with supplies. The TAC is a small school leaving a big mark.  “So many aviators in the North Carolina area were like, 'We have aircraft. We have skills. How can we get stuff out there?'” said Sydney Pinto, a commercial pilot at TAC. John Chesser started flying a year ago, and he’s been able to experience new lessons in the air while helping his neighbors in western North Carolina.  “Instead of just flying to Shilo and doing slam and go’s, it was like, 'Finally I can go take supplies even if it’s 200 pounds,'” Chesser said. With roots in Black Mountain, it was a humbling experience for Lucas Adams. He is a flight Instructor at TAC. “A lot of the supplies I’ve taken have been spread out into my hometown community,” Adams said. His aircraft gave him a different point of view.  “So I got to kind of fly over my house and my community and check things out. It was interesting to see the bird's-eye-view of things because ... through social media and all the pictures I’ve seen online ... you could tell how bad some of the damage was, but seeing it all at once from an overhead perspective ... was interesting ... It was kind of hard to see,” Adams said. At first, flying into western North Carolina posed a number of challenges until determined pilots pulled together to find solutions.  “It started with ... just a young man or a young woman with an airplane flying over these airports to see if they could even land there. There were a bunch of small airports that, even after Helene happened, were still covered in mud ... The radios weren’t working. No one could communicate ... Asheville, which is a larger airport out there, they were able to get their signals back first and say, 'Hey, we need supplies,'” Pinto said. Once they had the go-ahead, they slowly got supplies into the hands of people in need.  For Chesser, his perspective changed for good.  “To see ... everyone come together for it. That’s what made it so cool," Chesser said.
