(MANITOU SPRINGS) — The Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) is preparing to close its Manitou Springs location on Friday, Nov. 1, and begin a new chapter for the library somewhere many community members may recognize. Back in March of 2021, PPLD moved to its current location at the Manitou Art Center (MAC) after vacating the Carnegie Library building it originally inhabited due to ADA compliance issues with the historic building. The move from its original building to MAC allowed library services to remain available to anyone who sought them. In the beginning of 2024, a renovation project began at Carnegie Library when the City of Manitou Springs and a local task force raised the money needed to update the library to comply with today's accessibility requirements. Now, three years in the making, the project will finally close that chapter and move back into Carnegie Library. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Community project honors Manitou’s legacy with renovations to historical “reading room” “The PPLD Board of Trustees, the Library District, and the PPLD staff would first like to thank the Manitou Arts Center for working with the Library District on a colocation partnership agreement when we had to move from the Carnegie Library,” said PPLD CEO and Chief Librarian Teona Shainidze-Krebs. “This partnership allowed us to continue serving this loyal community the way it deserved to be served. And thanks to the community, we are now able to return to our historic roots in a location that will be accessible to all.” The project is expected to be done in November and PPLD will vacate the shared space with MAC mid-month. PPLD said the library plans to move into its newly renovated home shortly after. PPLD and the City are working closely to organize ground breaking activities in 2025 and celebrate its return to its original historic home.
