WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Howard University is celebrating its 100th homecoming and with thousands of people expected to be in attendance this weekend, safety is a top priority. Every year, 60 to 70 thousand people come out to Howard's homecoming to celebrate. With this year's homecoming being special, Howard University Police Chief Marcus Lyles said they've been planning since last October and they're ready. "We've been very proactive and very deliberate in the relationships that we've built to foster a safe environment," said Lyles. Georgetown University says group of students accessed sensitive, academic information Celebrating 100 years of homecoming means there's also a theme, "Yard of Fame." "It spotlights, leaders, and trendsetters who walk before us and are kind. And then also, it celebrates, trails yet to be blazed by our, our future alum," he said. With thousands of people expected to visit “The Mecca," Lyles said they're partnering with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and Federal agencies. The university's police department also has protocols in place to ensure everyone is safe, but it's going to take homecoming guests to do their part as well. “We're increasing our officers, coordinating, we're increasing our surveillance technology crowd management protocols, enhanced emergency communication systems. We need the communities and attendees' assistance in making sure that if they see something, they say something and they bring it to our attention," said Lyles. DC roads closed, parking restricted as Howard University celebrates 100th homecoming Several roads will be closed for homecoming activities from Oct. 18 through Oct. 19 and officials are encouraging drivers to avoid those areas. If you plan to attend Howard University's homecoming this weekend, here are a few way to stay safe: Plan ahead for transportation Be aware of your surroundings Use the buddy system Keep hydrated and know your limits Stay informed and follow Lyles said although safety is their top priority this weekend, seeing so many people come together is important as well. “We spent months planning to ensure our homecoming is safe. And joyous occasion. For our students and alums. This is not an opportunity just to celebrate the anniversary, but also a testament to the strength, and the unity of our community," he said.
