PHILADELPHIA — There was a surprise on the Eagles’ rapidly growing injury report Thursday, with second-year defensive tackle Jalen Carter sidelined with a shoulder issue. The former first-round pick who has wreaked havoc up front at times was in the locker room before the mid-afternoon practice and walked out to watch the session, but didn’t participate. It is unclear how or when he hurt his shoulder. Carter has 10 tackles and a sack this season after a promising rookie campaign. He had six sacks in 16 games (one start) a year ago. Cornerback Darius Slay, who injured his knee in the win against Cleveland, was also visible around the facility but once again didn’t participate in practice. He’s questionable for Sunday’s game against the Giants. Fellow corner Eli Ricks (groin) also sat out. Left tackle Jordan Mailata (hamstring) and tight end Dallas Goedert (hamstring) were still inactive, as expected. But rotational defensive tackle Milton Williams (ankle) participated on a limited basis, as did defensive tackle Byron Young (hamstring). • • • The Eagles are averaging 21.2 points per game (18th in the NFL) and 366 yards per game (10th). Much of the yardage has come from the rushing attack — 146.2 yards per game (sixth) — that is led by Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts. But the Eagles are just average when it comes to passing yards (220.6 per game, 14th). There has been increasing criticism of Hurts for hesitancy to throw over the middle. “I think against Cleveland, the way their coverages played out, they kind of packed the middle a little bit and had some isolations outside a little bit more one-on-one,” offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said. “Within the tempo offense, we were able to find the one-on-one opportunities. “Would we love to attack the middle of the field as time evolves? Absolutely. And we’ll continue to find spaces for that.” Wide receiver A.J. Brown, who is lethal in one-on-one coverage, said he saw no issue with Hurts’ approach. “I don’t make anything of it,” Brown said. “It has nothing to do with me even processing it.” • • • Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, the sixth overall pick out of LSU, had been out with a concussion since Week 4. But he passed concussion protocol this week and is expected to play against the Eagles. Despite playing in just four games, he is second among all rookie receivers with 35 catches and 386 receiving yards, and he’s tied for second with three touchdowns. He’ll likely see a lot of action against rookie Eagles corner Quinyon Mitchell, the 22nd overall selection out of Toledo, who has dazzled with 21 tackles, six passes defended and several near interceptions. • • • Another Giants weapon the Eagles have their eye on is nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who has seven sacks through six games. He hasn’t practiced this week due to a hip issue but said he expects to play. Barkley knows the two-time Pro Bowler well from his time in New York. “They have a great defensive unit over there,” Barkley said. “I’d say it all starts with 97 (Lawrence). I might be biased, because we have a friendship, but I think he’s the best defensive player in the league.”
