PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — From Prospect Terrace Park to Benefit Street, the College Hill section of Providence is a historical part of the Capital City – with a supernatural background. “We’re really looking at the asset of the historical stories of providence that don’t get told as much as they should,” said Bradly J. VanDerStad, Executive Director of the Providence Tour Company. “HP Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Sarah Helen Whitman are all really famous authors that really put Providence on the map.” You’re invited to immerse yourself into the horror fiction stories of HP Lovecraft, and walk in his footsteps through his favorite haunts. “With Lovecraft it was easy because he put a lot of his characters into different buildings around the east side of Providence,” said VanDerStad. And Lovecraft isn’t the only famous author who walked Providence’s centuries-old sidewalks. “With Edgar Allen Poe, he and Sarah Helen Whitman kind of lived up and down Bedford St,” said VanDerStad. The tour relives the briefly-engaged couple’s romance, including the spot they claimed love at first sight. It’s one of several walk throughs the Providence Tour Company has hosted for the past six years and counting. Other tours include crime and cuisine, art and architecture and power and politics. “They want to spend money on a tour they can see themselves in a little bit. They can see their special interests, they can see what they want to learn about,” said VanDerStad. There are only three weekends left of the dark tales tour. You can sign up for the tour here.
