MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) - The Medal of Honor Center Foundation is raising money to help build a leadership and training facility in the Lowcountry. The center will honor the country's heroes and teach the next generation the six qualities of the Medal of Honor: courage, integrity, commitment, sacrifice, citizenship, and patriotism. It will include a 50,000-square-foot training center and visitor attraction in Mount Pleasant. "Now more than ever bringing people together- especially young people- showing them the values of this country; and no matter what happens in three weeks we're still America. We're going to be America for a long time to come and organizations like this make us proud to be who we are to serve our country who we love," said David Bellavia, a Medal of Honor recipient. Visitors can hear stories from recipients, learn the core values of the Medal of Honor, and reflect on the heroes who showed courage for their country. Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry spoke about one of the core values of the center that meant a lot to him: "I was blessed to have great leadership in the military and their great leadership out there in the civilian world and what we're trying to do is bridge the two together and give that to the people trying to do better," said Petry. Recipients say the center is to inspire the next generation.Everyone is beating on this generation's kids, they're young, they're irresponsible: they're going to save the world. Our generation, Gen X, they said, 'they're couch potatoes' and look what we did after the towers fell, we deployed for 20 years of war. We did what our country asked us, and this generation is going to be no different and we're proud of them. We're just going to make sure they have the tools and mentorship to be able to win if challenged at war," said Bellavia. Mike Thorton, a Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient, asked everyone to support the new center to ensure the $75 million project gets built."Freedom is not free, freedom is written in the blood. I've been wounded 18 times myself. Please help us raise this money for this learning center to teach our children what this country is all about," said Thorton.
