Last Thursday, it was Danny Green who announced after fifteen years, he was retiring from basketball. This week, it was Aron Baynes. Though the Big Banger’s career was not as long at Green’s, his nine seasons taking (and dishing out) hits in the paint were quite impressive. Baynes started his NBA career in San Antonio. After going undrafted in 2009, Baynes played in Lithuania, Germany, Greece, and Slovenia, earning Slovenian Cups amid personal accolades and recognition before signing with the Spurs. Baynes was a full team player. Off court as a member of the now defunct Spuran Spuran, Aron showed his comic side. Fun fact, at the 1:07 point in the video, I can be seen next to Aron Baynes as he gives a food demonstration at the San Antonio Food Bank. He was wonderful with the students and emersed himself in the activity. Baynes went on to Detroit (bigger payday) and eventually Boston (opportunity for another title). Aron experienced a major health scare when it was revealed he had a spinal cord injury that almost ended career. He persevered but not until he had a darker period of recovery. Baynes shared, “The loneliest time in my life was laying in that hospital, going in and out of consciousness, going over my life plan and my goals and just crying.” Baynes leaves behind a legacy including representation on his national team. Of the San Antonio Spurs who claimed their title together in 2014, Baynes was one of the last to leave the league. Only Cory Joseph, Kawhi Leonard, and Patty Mills age 36, are still active. Cheers, Big Banger, enjoy your retirement. We look forward to witnessing your next chapter. Welcome to the Thread. Join in the conversation, start your own discussion, and share your thoughts.
