RIVERSIDE — Rancho Christian keeps adding pieces to its passing attack. Two weeks after quarterback Emiliano Villarreal played his first game, receiver Kamryn Jones made a record-setting debut as the Eagles held on to beat Arlington 40-31 Thursday night in a Sunbelt League game. “I feel amazing (and) I feel like this is a warm welcome, like I’m finally home,” said Jones, who previously was enrolled at Rancho Cucamonga but last played as a sophomore at St. John Bosco in 2022. Jones had 17 catches for 278 yards and two touchdowns for Rancho Christian (6-1-1 overall, 3-0 in league), which is unbeaten over its last six games. “He’s a great player. We all knew that,” Rancho Christian coach William Lowe said. “We just had to wait for his eligibility to clear, (but) he’s a great addition to the team.” Villarreal, who passed for 435 yards and five touchdowns in a narrow 42-36 win over Riverside Poly in Week 7, threw for 357 yards and five more touchdowns to beat Arlington. “Emiliano’s still just learning the playbook, but he’s getting better every week, too,” Lowe said. “He’s very poised for a high school quarterback.” Villarreal also added a rushing touchdown for the Eagles, who totaled 475 yards on offense. “They open up a lot for our offense, those two,” Lowe said. Daniel Gonzalez ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more — all in the second half — in the loss after Arlington (3-5, 0-3) fell behind early. “It’s just little things here and there,” Arlington coach Kevin Argumosa waid. “We came out here and we gave it our all but this a tough league.” Gonzalez was intercepted to halt Arlington’s first drive, and Rancho Christian scored less than a minute later as Villarreal connected with Jones for a 15-yard touchdown. Arlington’s Jacob Quiroz kicked a 24-yard field goal to open the second quarter but Villarreal led Rancho Christian down to field before finishing the nine-play drive a 1-yard rushing touchdown for a 13-3 lead after a missed extra point. Villarreal and Jones got together in the second quarter on a 47-yard touchdown, with Jones eluding two would-be tacklers on his way the end zone, and Rancho Christian led 26-3 after Villarreal’s third passing touchdown with less than 1 minute remaining to halftime. Gonzalez finished off back-to-back possessions with rushing touchdowns to start the second half and get the Lions to within 26-17 at the end of the third quarter.
