SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Progress is being made on the west side of the Shelter Island boat launch ramp, according to the Port of San Diego Thursday. The west floating dock was damaged in June due to san accumulation underneath it, the port said in a release. This caused the dock to bottom out at low tide. The east side floating docks remained open and accessible to boaters while the west dock had to be closed due to the damage. The issues were also believed to be made worse by the frequent and strong winter storms, which were unforeseen during the design development process, the release added. After getting necessary work permits through the Coastal and California Environmental Quality Act and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, engineering design documents were completed in June. The port worked with Bellingham Marine to build a new custom-designed replacement for the damaged dock for $266,114, according to the release. The Board of Port Commissioners approved a $386,775 construction contract with Harbour Construction Company on Thursday to complete repair work. According to the port, work will include removing about 250 cubic yards of sand, installing neoprene sleeves to cover the gaps in the seawall, removing the damaged part and installing the new dock. The total anticipated cost of repairs and replacement is about $717,000. Restoration and repair work are anticipated to start in December or January. The east floating dock will remain open during this time.
