ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two young brothers are getting a life-changing medical treatment all due to the University of New Mexico Hospital. The 10 and 12-year-old boys are suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This degenerative genetic disorder is the most severe form of dystrophy in children. If left untreated, it can lead to heart or lung failure. . Roswell organization creates transitional housing for youth aging out of CYFD The hospital is fully paying for their treatment. Each one-time dose of the newly FDA-approved drug Elevidys costs $3 million. "When I heard about this, despite all of the challenges we had in the logistical challenge lining up the meds, I was really excited because I knew we were going to change the lives of two young people that wouldn't have had a chance otherwise. So this is groundbreaking treatment. We are very proud to be able to provide this at the University of New Mexico Hospital," said UNMH Chief Operating Officer Mike Chicarelli. Although it is not a cure, this drug will slow the progression of the disease and extend their lives. After the infusion, the hospital will monitor their recovery for three months.
