ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It is an exciting time at the ABQ BioPark, Rozie the elephant is 22 months pregnant and the BioPark said she could deliver her baby at any time. Her care staff is taking extra precautions after Rozie's three other calves died of a virus known to be fatal for elephants. PNM holds demonstrations to promote safety among employees Staff and volunteers are on a 24/7 watch to make sure Rozie has what she needs when she goes into labor. "The average birth tends to happen around day 659 which puts us at the very first week of December so that's what we are anticipating based on average elephants and her past births," said Assistant Curator for Elephants Calli Hamlin. The BioPark said Rozie has been on a special diet throughout her pregnancy though she has had cravings for Bok choy.
