RIVERSIDE — Burnout. That was the fear King  girls golf coach Keith Moorman had after a slew of rescheduled matches meant his team had to play seven matches in a nine-day span to complete their regular season-slate in Big VIII League play. Thursday afternoon at General Old Golf Course, King crossed the finish line of that stretch undefeated, prevailing 210-214 against Roosevelt to join Santiago as co-champions of the Big VIII League. Defending Big VIII League individual champ Emilyn Czaplicki shot a 1-under-par 35 to lead the way for the Wolves (14-2 overall, 8-2 in league). “The girls came through and played solid golf today to finish this stretch,” Moorman said. “They seem to be getting better at the right time, and I feel like they’ll be ready for the challenge of Tuesday and playing for that CIF Southern Section playoff berth.” Czaplicki reached the green in two at the 425-yard, par-5 first hole and two-putted for birdie from about 15 feet. Roosevelt’s Amelia Chen also got up and down for birdie from an uphill lie just behind the right greenside bunker. The pair birdied both par 5s on Thursday. Czaplicki nearly holed a bunker shot at the fifth after coming up short in her attempt to reach the green in two, while Chen two-putted after hitting a fairway metal to 12 feet. Chen failed to get up and down at No. 8 from just in front of the green and finished with an even par round of 36. Czaplicki was nearly flawless around the greens on Thursday, getting up and down at Nos. 4, 8, and 9 to save pars and finish at 1-under par. With one group in, Roosevelt led 80-86 after Nichole Sun shot a 46 for the Mustangs and Samantha Woolweaver a 51 for King. In the second group, King’s Sarani Yapa made a 10-foot putt for birdie at No. 2, en route to a round of 37. The Wolves won group two 83-96 to go up by seven shots. “We were definitely disappointed to lose those two matches, but that adversity motivated us during this stretch run,” Yapa said. “We know we’ll have to put together another solid performance against Santiago to get back to the playoffs and we’re excited for that opportunity to do so on Tuesday.” Although Valentina Rodriguez and Claire Lee of Roosevelt (9-3, 7-3) defeated Sophia Llamas and Brooklyn Najera of King 89-92 in the third grouping, it wasn’t enough for the Mustangs to prevail. For a second straight year, the front nine scores from Tuesday’s opening round will determine which team earns that opportunity, per Big VIII League bylaws, and which team has to petition for entry as an at-large berth.
