WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- Israel confirmed that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed during a military operation in Gaza.  "And the United States, Israel and the entire world are better off as a result," Vice President Kamala Harris said. A DNA test was conducted on the body to confirm his identity. Sinwar was identified as one of the architects behind the October 7th attack against Israel. U.S. officials praised the collaboration between U.S. intelligence and Israel in locating Sinwar. Vice President Kamala Harris commended their efforts, stating, "A terrorist attack that triggered a devastating war in Gaza, a war that has led to unconscionable suffering of many innocent Palestinians." President Joe Biden said he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on Sinwar's death and expressed hope for a ceasefire. The State Department promises the U.S. will redouble its efforts to guarantee a ceasefire and hostage release happens. Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the State Department, remarked "We now have a different, well, we don't know who will be on the other end of the negotiating table now, but certainly won't be Sinwar." Lawmakers on Capitol Hill celebrated Sinwar's death. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) issued a statement saying, "His death brings hope for all those who seek to live in freedom, and relief to Israelis he has sought to oppress." As Israel intensifies its efforts against Hamas and Hezbollah, the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen using B-2 stealth bombers, marking one of the first uses of the aircraft in combat in years. Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder stated, "It also sends a very clear message that we can strike targets of this nature anytime, anywhere from around the world." The Pentagon affirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Israel while promising to redouble efforts to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
