SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – October 19 will mark the 20th year South Dakota State and North Dakota State compete for the Dakota Marker trophy.  Although the teams have played each other multiple times over the last hundred years, the tradition of passing the Dakota Marker trophy between schools started in 2004 when both teams left Division Two and joined what is now Division One FCS.  “The move to division one created a unique rivalry. It had us competing against not only the nation but each other, it surely elevated our football program,” former SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier said. “So now Saturday, it's gonna be number one versus number two. That's the two best teams in FCS football.” The trophy, a replica of the markers along the North and South Dakota border, has stayed in South Dakota for the last four years. With both teams tied at 10 wins each, the stakes for this year’s game will be high.  Southeast Tech to add SF prison location “When we played Fargo, it was a tough ticket to get and we got a few for our fans and players,” said Stiegelmeier, who was the head coach for 26 years. “It's a tough place to play in Fargo, really tough place to play.” This year the game will be in North Dakota at the Fargodome. According to the NDSU ticketing website, the game is sold out, but will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.  Owen Ward, a freshman at SDSU, said he and his friends have gone to every football game of the season so far, but won’t be able to make it up to Fargo on Saturday.  “I'll be watching, just excited to beat the Bison for what, three years in a row now,” Ward said. Ward’s friend, Nolan Petersen, added that the rivalry between the teams will make the game even more interesting to watch.  Back in 2004 when both teams made the division one move, Stiegelmeier said the rivalry between the schools helped push them both into the national spotlight.  “We're both out here in no man's land, so to speak and we kind of needed each other and so the rivalry really exploded and yes, the energy was phenomenal wherever we played,” he said. He added that despite the rivalry, the programs respect each other. “I mean, the level of football, the type of student-athletes we have in both programs, I think it's a really special rivalry, intense rivalry, but a respected rivalry.”
