New Orleans man sentenced in Hammond Walmart arson case

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A New Orleans man was sentenced in a Hammond Walmart arson case on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
According to the United States Department of Justice, 45-year-old Terrence Coe has been sentenced to 60 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to committing arson in a Dec. 24, 2022, incident. Coe will also be placed on supervised release for three years following his release, and he will be made to pay a $100 special assessment fee.

According to the Louisiana Fire Marshal's Office, on the day of the crime, authorities arrested Coe after he was seen setting a fire in the paint aisle at the Walmart in the 2700 block of W. Thomas Street.
The Walmart was evacuated of 500 customers, but no injuries were reported and the fire was quickly put out.
According to court documents, Coe had later admitted to officers with the Hammond Police Department that he started the fire with a lighter while opening a package that he wanted to steal.
