Harvey Canal Tunnel to close for $50M rehabilitation project

HARVEY, La. (WGNO) — Officials with the Department of Transportation and Development announced the full closure of the Harvey Canal Tunnel.
Starting Monday, Oct. 21 up until Wednesday, Nov. 27, the tunnel will be closed to all vehicular traffic.

This is due to construction work being done as a part of the $53 million Harvey Canal Rehabilitation Project.
Currently, the westbound lane of traffic is open but will close on Monday until April 4, 2025. The eastbound has been closed since February but will reopen for use in November.

As a result of the closure, drivers will have to Interstate 90B, the elevated expressway, as a detour.
DOTD officials are also alerting drivers to be cautious when driving through construction sites and to watch for workers and equipment in the area.
