Lexington bus service Lextran is offering free rides on Election Day in hopes to increase voter turnout. Fayette County had a voter turnout of 13.3 percent during this year’s primary election. The free rides are meant to help residents get to their polling station, but are available for anyone. Emily Elliott is Lextran’s Director of Planning and Community Development. She says it’s a way to help those who might have challenges getting out to vote. “If transportation is that barrier, by providing free rides, we can help remove that and make sure that people can get to their polls and have access throughout the community.” Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those who are waiting in line at 6 p.m. will still be allowed to vote. Trips to your polling station can be planned through Lextran’s online map. Information on routes for early voting is available here, and general info on voting in Lexington is available here. ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
