KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 78-year-old Independence, Missouri man is charged in connection to a recent break-in and burglary at Betty Rae's ice cream shop in the River Market. Jackson County prosecutors charged John Heckman with second-degree burglary, stealing and first-degree damage to property. More break-ins plague businesses in the Kansas City area According to court documents, Kansas City police officers responded to 4th and Delaware on Sunday, Oct. 13, on a reported burglary. Officers saw a broken glass door at one entrance. Video showed an older man throwing a rock through a window and entering the business. He then carries out a business safe. Detectives obtained video that showed a dark blue Subaru. The man in the video is seen loading the safe in the vehicle. Other video showed distinctive tattoos associated with Heckman. Download the FOX4 News app on iPhone and Android KCPD joined Kansas City, Kansas police officers and located the suspect in a KCK residence. Detectives interviewed Heckman who told detectives he spent the money on dope and the casinos. Heckman is currently being held on no bond.
