ASHE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- Nearly three weeks after Helene went through western North Carolina, some people in Ashe County are still stranded at their homes. People who live near creeks had their driveways, bridges and culverts washed away. But a group of locals and out-of-towners are helping to connect them to their community by rebuilding bridges and culverts. FOX8 went around with the newly formed nonprofit called Lansing’s Bridge to Recovery. The list of projects is extremely long and gets longer every day. About 20 new requests come in each day for people to get their driveways, culverts and other areas fixed. “Slow going,” said Leeth Davis, one of the founders. Together they rebuild by brainstorming. “You fix one problem, and then two more, and then we will solve those as well." Davis and his wife Emily went around Ashe County to clear brush immediately after the storm. “We wound up here on Roaring Fork Road ... by the grace of God,” Emily said. They saw an isolated home with no way in and no way out. “We started lovingly calling it Roaring Fork Island,” Emily said. They built a temporary bridge for the homeowners, but it lit a fire in them to do more. “Even if the state and federal government can help these people, it will take a long time to get to them,” Emily said. The group has completed nearly 40 projects in their first two and a half weeks. “We are fortunate enough to have a team of professionals that are gathering at all the volunteer efforts ... This isn’t a bunch of guys that have gone and rented equipment and figuring it out as we go. This is what we all do for a living,” Leeth said. The nonprofit has help from all professions, including bridge designers, engineers and contractors. “Helping friends and family. I’d rather do that than make money.,” said Dakota Lucas, a contractor. All of them are donating their time to help bridge the gap until permanent solutions arrive. “People up here give their shirt off their back to people ... Being raised with this community and that kind of mentality, you try to do what you have been raised and shown to do,” Lucas said. Each project takes a different amount of time to complete, but all of them need materials and volunteers to make it happen.
