FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation is one step closer to starting a construction project to repair and renovate the splash pad at Headwaters Park. At the monthly Board of Park Commissioners meeting Thursday, members approved the lowest bid that arose during the bidding process that started a few weeks ago. While the project intends to keep the current design intact as much as possible, Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Director Steve McDaniel said some modifications have to be made since the splash pad was originally intended to be a fountain and health regulations regarding splash pads have changed since its construction. "Ultimately, it's going to look very similar to what it is now. We didn't want to change that [history] of the splash pad and how Headwaters was designed," McDaniel said. If City Council approves the project, McDaniel hopes to start construction this winter and have the splash pad ready for use before Headwaters Park's annual festival season gets underway. Funding for the project will still come from a mix of supplemental local income tax funding and money from the Headwaters Park Alliance, which used to oversee the park. The cost of project will be roughly $600,000 to $650,000. The Headwaters Park splash pad has been out of commission since 2020.
