CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A 25-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly being impaired during a crash in northeast Charlotte that killed two people, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to East W.T. Harris Boulevard near The Plaza in regards to a car crash.  Upon arrival, police located a Hyundai Sonata with heavy front-end damage and a Toyota Camry with heavy right-side damage. Two occupants in the Toyota vehicle, 47-year-old Aneesah Akbar and 74-year-old Darlene Akbar, were transported to a hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The Hyundai driver, 25-year-old De’Ontrey Taylor, was transported with non-life-threatening injuries. The preliminary investigation indicates that Taylor was impaired and driving at a high-rate of speed on East W.T. Harris Boulevard.  Taylor collided with the Toyota vehicle while it was making a left turn, police said. The impact caused both vehicles to go over a curb and onto a grassy area near the road. Taylor was released from the hospital and interviewed by detectives in Uptown. He has since been charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle, reckless driving and no operator’s license. The crash is still under an active investigation.
