BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The mother of a 2-year-old girl who died after suffering injuries authorities say were consistent with abuse pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including murder. Chandy McCarthy, 40, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, assault of a child under 8 resulting in death and child cruelty. She's being held without bail and is due back in court Oct. 29. Co-defendant Gregory MacDonald, the girl's stepfather, is scheduled for arraignment Friday on identical charges. The girl had extensive bruising on her face, back, stomach and other areas. MacDonald told detectives he "snapped," the filing says, adding the injuries were inflicted as he tried to help the child when she experienced medical emergencies. In March of last year, authorities in Nevada -- where the couple previously lived -- investigated after bruising was found on the girl and her twin sister, according to the filing. MacDonald again blamed the injuries on medical emergencies, the filing says.
