Mayfield Village has announced that it will be hosting ‘A Salute to Veterans’ on Nov. 11. The celebration of veterans will start at 10 a.m. at the Village’s Community Room, 6621 Wilson Mills Road, with a ceremony in the morning followed by a “light lunch provided by Pizzazz Pizzeria,” according to the press release. Parks and Recreation Director Shane McAvinew said the event has been happening for the past three years and he always hopes people will sign up for it. He said the registration deadline for veterans to sign up is Nov. 8 and that the event will be open to all veterans and their guests, not just Mayfield Village residents. “We accept veterans from anywhere, I don’t care what county they come from, where they come from, it’s all open,” McAvinew said. “It’s a nice event that we started a few years ago and last year we got 30 people to sign up for it. The first year we had 10 so it’s nice to see that growth. “We have a presentation, we have a pinning ceremony… we have someone that plays taps and the national anthem on the horn, or we have someone sing the national anthem.” During the pinning ceremony, veterans get called up on stage and have a chance to talk. He said that they also bring in speakers to talk about their experiences in the services, and one year they had a bagpipe player. “His presentation was about being involved in the military and then he played some patriotic songs on his bagpipe,” McAvinew recalled. “We have a list of veterans and introduce them, they come up to the stage and we pin them. “After that whole thing if they come up and want to say a few words on their experience they are able to and then we have lunch.” McAvinew added. He said the village decided to start up the Veterans Day event again after noticing how many seniors were veterans and coming to other events. He said a previous coordinator felt like the veterans’ events weren’t as necessary and now after their retirement, McAvinew’s pushed for that to change. “We started adding things back that we used to incorporate every year and that included the veterans event,” McAvinew said. “I felt like that was something, dealing with older adults, we have a lot of veterans… It’s honestly something that should have always been here. “In my opinion every senior center should have that (a Veterans Day ceremony) because you have so many veterans that come to your programs that you want to honor them and come for this day.” For more information on the event, or to sign up, you can call the Mayfield Village Parks and Recreation department at 440-461-5163 or visit https://mayfieldvillage.activityreg.com.
