The Princeton High football team will be playing with high stakes when it hosts Trenton for Homecoming on Friday night. With a win, the Tigers would pull even with the Tornadoes in the Valley Division at 3-1. It would also count for huge power points since Trenton is a Group V program, and Princeton is clinging to the 16th and final playoff spot in South Group IV. Elsewhere in the state tournament picture, 7-0 Hopewell Valley moved up to the top seed in South Group III and is poised to have homefield advantage in a bracket if it wins its last two regular-season games. Allentown is No. 9 in that grouping, while Nottingham is No. 16 and currently on track to play Hopewell in the first round. In addition to Princeton’s standing in South Group IV, Northern Burlington is No. 9 and Steinert is No. 13. Notre Dame, meanwhile, has moved up to No. 6 in Non-Public B after beating Paul VI last week. Here’s what to watch for in Week Seven of the WJFL, with Steinert and Hamilton West back in action after being off last week because they clash on Thanksgiving. All other local schools play every week until the playoffs start in two weeks. Friday West Windsor-Plainsboro (2-5) at Ewing (1-6), 6 p.m. West Windsor had its two-game winning streak snapped with a surprising 26-0 blowout loss at Hightstown. Ewing fell by 29 points at Allentown after securing its first win of the season over KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy. Both of these teams like to run the ball a lot while sprinkling in passes. The outcome looks like a toss-up. Steinert (3-3) at Hopewell Valley (7-0), 6 p.m. After edging Burlington Township last Thursday, Hopewell looks poised to complete its second undefeated regular season in three years. Steinert is rested after earning a 10-0 win over Moorestown two weeks ago, but the Spartans have struggled when matched up with top Mercer area teams (42-7 loss to Notre Dame and 26-14 loss to Allentown). Pennsville (3-4) at Lawrence (3-4), 6:30 p.m. Lawrence went from being 3-0 to falling almost completely out of the playoff picture, largely because the Cardinals have scored only 26 points over the last four games. Still, Lawrence is 3-1 at home and should have a chance to rebound here. Pennsville is a run-heavy team with 1,175 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. Its wins are over Overbook, Audubon and Penns Grove. Allentown (5-2) at Hightstown (2-5), 7 p.m. Allentown has a chance to host a playoff game if it wins its last two games. The Redbirds are averaging 30 points per game and are heavily favored on the road here. Hightstown has won two of its last three games, though, with shutout wins over Nottingham and West Windsor. The Rams will need another stellar defensive effort to be competitive. Hamilton West (1-5) at Robbinsville (2-5), 7 p.m. Robbinsville has a solid chance to snap its three-game losing streak, but the Ravens need to clean up their run defense and cut down on turnovers. Hamilton West is coming off a bye, and its lone win remains a 13-6 result over Princeton four weeks ago. If the Hornets can run the ball and play some hard-nosed defense, this game could go either way. Trenton (4-3) at Princeton (3-4), 7 p.m. Trenton will be eager to respond after losing at Northern Burlington on a two-point conversion in overtime last Saturday. Princeton lost by two touchdowns at Nottingham. These schools now meet for the first time since 2013. Princeton has a chance to earn a huge win because of its balanced offense and opportunistic defense that has forced 14 turnovers. But Trenton should have the advantage up front, and that might make the difference in the end. Saturday Notre Dame (5-2) at Nottingham (2-5), Noon Notre Dame is really clicking offensively with at least four touchdowns in four straight games including a signature 27-19 win over Paul VI last Friday. Nottingham has climbed back into the playoff race with consecutive wins over Hamilton West and Princeton, but the Northstars will need to play extremely disciplined on defense to compete against one of Mercer’s strongest programs.
