Provided below are the news briefs from the October 16th, 2024, Tallahassee City Commission meeting. Item 5.03 The City Commission recognized the Capital Region Real-Time Crime Center which was recently awarded Center of the Year by the National Real Time Crime Center Association, recognizing its excellence in multi-agency collaboration and innovation. Item 9.01 The City Commission voted 3-2 (Matlow & Porter against) to approve the proposed 2025 City Commission meeting schedule. The proposed 2025 City Commission meeting schedule includes 12 regular meetings throughout the year, three workshops, City Commission retreat in January and a total of five public budget discussions, including two public hearings in September. Item 12.01 Thomas Whitely, Director of Operations & Innovation, provided the City Commission an overview of the City’s preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene. Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane with 140mph winds near Dekle Beach in Taylor County, approximately 57 miles southeast of Tallahassee Thursday, September 26, 2024. Helene is the second deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. this century with a current death toll over 230, which is expected to increase as rescue and recovery efforts continue. At peak, the storm left approximately 4.8 million customers without power across the southeastern U.S. Item 12.02 The City Commission voted to adopt a resolution approving the renaming of a segment of Pasco Street (from Orange Avenue to Bragg Drive) to Anita Davis Place. One of Davis’ cornerstone accomplishments includes ensuring both the Leon County Commission and Leon County School Board have single-member districts instead of at-large positions, allowing certain areas to elect representatives focused on their needs. Davis’ other initiatives as a Leon County Commissioner include building parks in Woodville, the Southside library branch, and a Southside health clinic. Item 12.03 The City Commission voted to approve a construction contract award for the Taxiway Bravo Rehabilitation Project at Tallahassee International Airport and authorized the city manager to negotiate the contract with M of Tallahassee, Inc. The Taxiway Rehabilitation project will provide for improvements to the Airport’s primary parallel taxiway that includes pavement rehabilitation, drainage modifications, and upgrades to airfield lighting, signage, and pavement markings that comply with the latest Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design and construction standards. Item 12.04 The City Commission voted to approve an agreement with the Florida State Guard (FSG) for the lease and development of property at the Tallahassee International Airport. The project will provide approximately $7 million in FSG-funded and owned facilities, the title to which will revert to the City at the expiration or earlier termination of the Agreement. It is estimated to result in over $2.6 million of new revenue to the Airport during the term of the agreement which will be deposited into the Aviation Operating Fund. Item 12.05 The City Commission voted to approve the 2025 Audit Work Plan. Item 12.06 The City Commission voted 4-1 (Matlow against) to approve the Collective Bargaining Agreements with the Tallahassee Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2339. Commissioner Discussion: The City Commission voted unanimously to investigate purchasing the property currently owned by the Circle K company located in the new Canopy neighborhood in northeast Tallahassee. Residents have complained about the location of a gas station near residential properties.
