COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- Colonial Heights Animal Control staff members saved seven puppies who were found abandoned in a cardboard box in the city on Thursday morning. According to a post on the agency's Facebook page, staff responded to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Colonial Heights and Petersburg at around 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 after a cardboard box containing six puppies was found outside the front door. The puppies, who are believed to be around two weeks old, were found stained with urine and with feces stuck to their bodies. In the Facebook post, the agency said that the temperature outside was between 45 and 50 degrees at the time they were found. "We are very thankful that the SPCA was open today and the staff member who found them took immediate action by bringing them inside the headed building and putting them in a clean tote and a nice arm blanket because if they weren't who knows what would have happened to these babies," said the agency in the post. The puppies have been transferred to a rescue for neonatal care and are not available for adoption, according to the agency.
