(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A man, who was found guilty of First-Degree Murder for a shooting in 2023 was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole earlier this week. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO), the sentencing for 24-year-old Kevin Rued took place on Tuesday, Oct. 15. On May 28, 2023, around 3 a.m., deputies responded to a shots fired call in the 2000 block of B Street in unincorporated El Paso County, west of Peterson and Galley Roads. When they arrived, they found the victim, 25-year-old Sylena Maldonado, who was taken to the hospital but later died from her injuries. Rued was quickly identified as a person of interest and was located by EPSO's SWAT team on Fay Drive in the Security-Widefield area. Courtesy EPSO: The booking photo is of Kevin Rued from May of 2023 After Rued was brought in for questioning by the Sheriff's Office he was booked into the El Paso County Jail on First-Degree Murder, Felony Menacing, and other related charges. "While nothing can bring back Sylena Maldonado, I hope her family may find some comfort in knowing justice has been served," said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. "This outcome is a testament to our commitment to the citizens of El Paso County and to ensuring criminals who break the law, such as Kevin Rued, are held accountable." Sheriff Roybal also had this message for his team of investigators and the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's Office: "I thank my Investigations Division and the District Attorney’s Office for their persistence and dedication in holding this criminal accountable for his heinous, unjustifiable actions."
