(WHTM) - Thousands of fire pits are being recalled due to "flame jetting and fire spreading" hazards that have resulted in over a dozen burn injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission. The CPSC said 89,500 indoor/outdoor tabletop Colsen-branded fire pits, including some manufactured by another company, are being recalled. The commission says flame jetting can occur while the fire pit reservoir is being refilled with alcohol, causing fire to "flash back" to the container and expel burning alcohol outward. Anyone nearby risks being burned. Splashed or spilled alcohol can also cause a flash fire that can spread. The commission says alcohol flames can be invisible. 7,000 Arctic Cat vehicles recalled due to crash hazard So far, there have been 31 incident reports and 19 burn injuries, including two cases resulting in third-degree burns to over 40% of victims' bodies. Additionally, six cases "have involved surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement," according to the commission. The affected fire pits are black or gray, come in five shapes and were sold by Colsen, Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta and TikTok. They also came with a flame extinguisher. The CPSC says anyone with these fire pits should dispose of them and should not resell or donate them. Selling or distributing recalled products is a violation of federal law. No refund is available because the company "does not have the financial resources to offer a remedy to consumers," according to the commission.
