Riverside at Mayfield football: Preview capsule for Oct. 18 game
Oct 17, 2024
Riverside at Mayfield
What: Western Reserve Conference game
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 18
Where: Wildcat Stadium
Records: Riverside 4-4 (2-1 WRC), Mayfield 3-5 (1-2 WRC)
Last week: Kenston def. Riverside, 31-14, Chardon def. Mayfield, 31-7
Playoff positioning: Riverside 9th in Division II, Region 5, Mayfield 20th in Division II, Region 5
For the record: With the WRC race likely out of reach — unless league leader Kenston loses its final two games of the regular season, this game holds major playoff implications. Mayfield needs a win, while a loss probably eliminates the Wildcats from Region 5 contention. Riverside can come close to clinching a playoff berth with a win here, but a loss hits the Beavers hard. … Riverside leans heavily on the area’s leading rusher Kyndall McCaleb (1,279 yards, 14 touchdowns). QB David Seibert and versatile Donovan Conwell are dangerous in the run game as well. Seibert doesn’t throw a lot, but Ethan Baker (14 catches) is the leading target. The Beavers led Kenston, 7-0, early last week but gave up 31 unanswered points before scoring again. … Mayfield led Chardon early, but also gave up 31 unanswered points. A.J. Rogers went over the 1,000-yard passing mark last week and now has 1,087 for the season. Lantz Reed (33 catches, 370 yards) and JD Dinnen (25-198) are his top targets. … This game comes down to defense, specifically Riverside’s pass defense against Mayfield’s air attack and the Wildcats’ run defense against McCaleb & Co.
