PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Hundreds of students are planning to gather on the Main Green of Brown University’s campus to protest the university’s board, voting against divesting from companies that students believe are funding Israel’s military efforts. Last week, the Brown Corporation voted against divestment, after determining the university had “no direct investments in any of the companies targeted for divestment and that any indirect exposure for Brown in these companies is so small that it could not be directly responsible for social harm.” This evening, the Jewish Pro-Palestinian group, Jewish Voice for Peace Rhode Island, will deliver postcards to Providence City Councilors, in support of its ordinance proposal that would halt city investments in sovereign bonds in Israel. In a release, they group said they will start with a ceremony celebrating the Jewish High Holiday Sukkot, before delivering the postcards. City council ordinance 45610 was met with backlash from Mayor Brett Smiley, who promised to veto it should it pass. Jewish Voice for Peace will start their protest at 9 p.m. this evening outside of city hall. Tomorrow, The Brown Divest Coalition said it plans to gather on Brown University’s Main Green to protest. According to the Brown Divest Coalition, they believe the companies Brown did not decide to reject divestment from “facilitate Israeli war crimes, which include genocide in Gaza, illegal occupation of the West Bank, and invasion of Lebanon.” The Brown Divest Coalition said the university’s decision “is not only an egregious moral failing and affront to democratic values the institution purports to uphold, but an act of cowardice that sets a terrifying precedent of forced institutional neutrality in the face of genocide.” Partner organizations at Rhode Island College, Providence College, and the University of Rhode Island also plan to attend the protest. The protest is planned to begin at 9 a.m. Categories: News
