A program in Perry Village that helps eligible residents take care of their yards and homes will be expanding its service area. Perry Village PITCH In soon will have authorization to conduct projects in Perry Township. It is a nonprofit program that strives to fulfill requests from residents who need assistance with tasks or chores inside or outside of their homes. Residents who contact the service for help typically can’t do yardwork, house cleaning or home-maintenance projects because of medical- or age-related limitations. Perry Township trustees intend to approve a motion at their Oct. 22 meeting that will allow PITCH In to operate in the township. Trustees learned more about it at their Oct. 8 meeting. During that gathering, PITCH In Administrative Committee Chairman Rick Walker told trustees about some of the different projects that it has completed since the program was launched approximately 3 1/2 years ago. Walker, who also serves as a member of Perry Village Council, asked trustees if they’d be receptive to the organization assisting Perry Township residents. In addition, he expressed his hopes that trustees would play a role in selecting projects to undertake in the township. Township Administrator Karen Sundy said she had conversations with township Solicitor James Lyons and village Solicitor James O’Leary, and it was decided that Perry Township trustees would pass a motion on Oct. 22 allowing the organization to function in the township. That motion will “encourage the PITCH In program to assist residents in the township and utilize any volunteers from the township who wish to participate,” Sundy said. It was created after Walker and Perry Village Council President Jean Schonauer initially proposed establishing a community-assistance program. The first word in the title of the program’s name stands for Perry Investing Toward Community Help. It was decided to add the word “In” to create a phrase that would attract attention and be easy to remember. Before going out into the community to conduct projects, Walker and Schonauer sharpened the description of what the program was intended to do; developed an application and review and approval process for people who seek help through the program; and decided how to recruit and screen volunteers. An advisory committee also was formed to ensure that the program’s administration and operation are transparent. Some of the projects that PITCH In volunteers have carried out  include washing windows, lawn mowing and yard maintenance, cleaning gutters, shoveling snow and walking a dog.
