ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – It's one thing to add a new player to the roster, but it's another thing to get him ready to play. Especially in the middle of the season. Amari Cooper arrived in Buffalo after the Bills acquired him through a trade with the Browns. While the wide receiver has 10 years of NFL experience, making the switch between teams midseason can be a challenge. "It's not the easiest thing just based on verbiage and terminology and what system he was in before this," Josh Allen said. "Our system's not the easiest to learn. But again, the things that I've heard about him and know about him, he's a very smart guy who's going to work extremely hard." The trade to Buffalo isn't the first time Cooper has been traded in the middle of a season. Midway through his fourth year in the league, the Raiders traded Cooper to Dallas for a first round pick. While Cooper had more time to adjust to the Cowboys' offense, as they had a bye week following the trade, Cooper credits himself for being able to quickly adjust to a new team. "I think I'm a pretty cerebral guy, at least cerebral enough to learn the playbook as fast as I can so I can go out there and get lined up, just run routes, catch the ball, and get open," he said. Cooper's past experiences being traded may make the transition smoother, but Brandon Beane said that receiver is one of the toughest positions to onboard midseason. However, it will help that Bills receiver coach Adam Henry worked with him in Dallas. "There's things you can do tagging plays, there's various ways," Beane said. "And I do think Adam Henry having coached him, maybe he can say, 'this is what we called it in Dallas' or things like that just to kind of help speed that up." With Cooper's arrival, Sean McDermott and his staff are focused on getting him acclimated to a new system. The head coach emphasized making sure Allen is comfortable with a new target on the field. "Sometimes with wide receivers there's different skillsets, and sometimes they're overlapping skillsets, and so you have to figure the pieces out," McDermott said. "Making sure, again, we're able to get in a rhythm, maintain our rhythm. More than anything, Josh is comfortable with everything." McDermott has yet to announce if Cooper will play on Sunday's game against the Titans.
